Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Sam Dowd earned a BFA from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and an MFA from Kansas State University where he met his wife, Jenny.
Passionate about art as a career, he and Jenny moved frequently, teaching and producing art for shops, galleries, and fairs across the country. Landing in Jackson, Wyoming in 2007, Sam served as the Ceramics and Sculpture Manager for the Art Association of Jackson Hole, and in 2010, he and Jenny launched Dowd House Studios. Sam has also been involved in several public art installations, including mounting a 16’ kinetic steel canoe over a state highway and installing his clay sculpture, “Glimpse”, on the grounds of the Center for Arts in Jackson. While in Jackson, Sam also managed many successful community art programs for kids and adults and curated multiple shows and workshops.
In 2021, Sam and Jenny relocated to NWA to open their Prairie Grove studio and fulfill their dream of becoming full-time potters. With a passion for sharing his experiences and work with his new community, Sam and Jenny have been members of the Community Creative Center’s Open Studio program since spring and are active supporters of community arts programming in NWA.
Nina grew up in a clay studio as the child of sculptors and has been a teacher for over 20 years. During that time she has taught every age from kindergarten to high school and multiple subjects such as Spanish, PE, skiing, art, and all school subjects. The teaching role also allowed her the opportunity to teach and live overseas for seven years in China and both the Northern and Southern parts of Kazakhstan. Part of her decision to become a teacher was to try and escape the legacy of artists in her family and do something different and yet she finds herself drawn to creating a balance between the need for art in her life and her passion for teaching. Teaching art has proven to be a happy medium. She is currently teaching art at Thaden school in Bentonville and tinkering in her own home-based clay studio. She has a full life with two daughters, two dogs, two cats, five chickens, and the desire to say yes to it all.
