Profile Teaching Artist Jana Whatley

Jana Whatley

Jana is a recent Houston, TX transplant living in Fayetteville, AR. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the University of Houston in 2014. An artist in her own right, she dominantly works using sculptural installation, video, photography, and performance. She has held professional positions as a teaching artist, art curriculum coordinator, consultant, community event organizer, caregiver, and director in early childhood education settings for about ten years cumulatively. Jana is a Jack of all trades with an aptitude for ways and means.

She is interested in the idea that “necessity is the mother of invention.” When options are limited, and the emphasis is placed on problem-solving and exploration, the discovery is often much more interesting and meaningful. Jana also has a personal understanding of how freedom for creative expression and connection to a community can impact a person’s development. From her experiences, she has learned that an excellent path toward a quality life is access to and connection with community arts organizations. In seeking these institutions out, Jana has found resources that would have otherwise been inaccessible to her. Her varied experiences with teaching, leadership, performance, sculpture, and theatre have been a source of encouragement for the growth of both her practice and person. These shared values are what brought Jana to CCC’s doorstep.
