The Architecture of Clay – Intro to Handbuilding
This method explores clay’s ability to be formed from a soft, inert substance into a rigid building material. We will look at basic hand building techniques in a way that will allow exploration and discovery of clay’s structural capabilities. Each week students will participate in traditional clay forming techniques, focusing on getting a feel for each new technique. Students will then develop projects that take advantage of clay’s function as a building material. We will also be using a clay extruder as a way of forming the clay into modular “building blocks,” through which we will develop our own “architectural” sculptures. This class is open to all experience levels and will be geared toward experimentation as well as completing finished sculpture in clay.
Week 1 – Under Pressure: Pinching technique, free form structures and enclosures will be built using pinching and hand manipulation.
Week 2 – Taking Your Clay on a Walk: Coiling by hand and/or using extruded clay shapes.
Week 3 – X,Y, and Z: Clay Slab building, students will begin using clay slabs made by hand rolling and/or by using the extruder.
Week 4 – Modular Building: Students will experiment with the pre-cut extruder die shapes. Then students will design and build sculptures based on the repeated shapes.
Week 5 – Final Project: Students will come with individual project plans based on the previous projects. A final sculpture will be executed before glazing the final week.
Week 6 – Glazing!!
